Book Cover

MICHELLE STUART: DRAWN FROM NATURE
This monograph is the first survey of Michelle Stuart's works on paper. It accompanies the traveling exhibition Drawn From Nature. The book focuses on the artist's aesthetic investigations of personal and shared cultural histories and the nature of time measured within nature's substances. Stuart has pioneered several highly regarded approaches to art making, including her earth-sculptured books, her site-specific Land Art, and her most recent series composed of photographic images in multi-layered narrative grids and sequences. In addition, she is known for her innovative earth-rubbed paper and use of encaustic, seeds, wax, and other media. Richly illustrated with examples in the exhibition and related works, the volume's visuals complement insightful essays by Nancy Princenthal, Jane McFadden, Julie Joyce, Alicia Longwell, and Anna Lovatt, curator of the exhibition, all of them sensitively illuminating this landmark work. 160 pages. 114 illustrations.
